I haven’t eaten meat for 16 years. I have been to countless BBQs and most of the times ate the salads while others ate their meat, but I’ve come to a conclusion – if you want to have enjoy a nice vegan BBQ it’s possible – just marinate your tofu and put it on the grill!
A few notes –
This marinade works well if you bake the tofu instead.
It will be tastier if you marinade it longer, but 2-3 hours would due.
If the BBQ is with carnivores – you may want to use an aluminium foil to keep your meal vegan.
Tofu absorbs marinades best when squeezed well. it may sound strange but it would work best if you - freeze, unfreeze and squeeze the water out. if you haven't got time for it - skip the next step -squeeze gently and marinade.
cut into big cubes (big enough to put on a skewer), put the cubes in the freezer for 1-2 hours. unfreeze for 0.5-1 hours and now gently squeeze the tofu without breaking it.
Combine all the marinade ingredients and mix well. marinade the tofu for at least two hours (or if possible- overnight). keep in the fridge.
if baking - bake in the marinade at 170 degrees C for 30 minutes (you may need to add fluids. if Barbecuing - skewer gently on a thin skewer, keep on the BBQ for about 10-15 minutes. Bon appetite!
